Attribution Surveys for Shopify

Your pixel can't see ChatGPT, podcasts or word of mouth. Your customers can.

Why ask

Last click credits the final step. Customers remember the first one.

Tracking tells you what happened right before an order. It rarely tells you what created the demand. A post-purchase survey fills that gap in one question.

Search takes the credit

Someone hears about you elsewhere, then searches your name. Branded search reports the sale.

Dark channels stay dark

AI assistants, podcasts, group chats and word of mouth leave little or nothing for a pixel to read.

Ad platforms overlap

Each platform counts the same order for itself. A buyer’s answer gives you one view from outside them.

Channel Intelligence

See where last click gets it wrong

Put survey answers next to last click, projected across all your orders. The gap between the two columns shows which channels create demand and which ones simply collect it.

ChannelSurveyLast clickProjected revenueNPS
Google 24% 51% $53,400 42
TikTok 22% 9% $48,900 18
Meta 17% 33% $37,800 39
Friend or family 16% 4% $35,600 78
Podcast 14% 2% $31,100 71
AI assistant 7% 1% $15,600 64

Example data for an illustrative store.

  • Answers matched to each order, its value and the customer’s LTV
  • Results projected to all orders, not only those who answered
  • UTM and last click data in the same report
  • NPS by channel, so you scale the customers worth keeping
Advanced attribution

Advanced attribution, from your first survey

“YouTube” doesn’t tell you who to pay. Responsly goes down to the exact placement, with no add-on to buy.

Follow-ups that adapt

YouTube asks which creator, Podcast asks which show, AI assistant asks which one.

Write-ins that sort themselves

Athena reads “Other” answers and files them under the right channel, typos included.

Answers that travel

Each answer stays on the order and reaches Klaviyo and GA4, so your segments and reports can use it.

More than a source

Know where they came from, and whether they’re happy they did

An attribution tool stops at the channel. Responsly carries on with NPS, open comments and Athena, so marketing and customer teams read the same picture.

Scale what lasts

A cheap channel with low NPS and low LTV is a warning, however good the last-click numbers look.

Brief with real words

Use the phrases customers from each channel use, in your ads, emails and product pages.

Fix what a channel promises

Spot when one audience expects something your product doesn’t deliver.

Setup

Live on your store in minutes, without code

Shopify no longer runs pasted scripts on the Thank you page, so the survey is a native checkout block. It works on every plan from Basic Shopify up. The setup guide walks through each step, and the Shopify integration page covers what connects where.

  1. Install the app

Add Responsly Post Purchase Survey from your Shopify admin.

  2. Connect Responsly

Log in or create a free account and pick a workspace.

  3. Choose a survey

Start from the ready-made post-purchase survey or use your own.

  4. Add the block

Drop the Responsly survey block into the checkout editor and save.

Frequently asked questions

What is an attribution survey?

A short question, usually on the Thank you page, that asks buyers how they found you. Because the answer comes from the customer, it covers channels that tracking cannot see, such as podcasts, word of mouth and AI assistants.

What does HDYHAU mean?

HDYHAU stands for “How did you hear about us?”, the standard question in post-purchase attribution surveys.

Does an attribution survey replace my analytics?

No, it complements them. Pixels and UTMs record the clicks before a purchase. A survey records what the customer remembers. Comparing the two shows where last click gives too much credit and where it gives too little.

How accurate are survey answers?

They are self-reported, so they reflect memory rather than a perfect record. That is why good surveys use a clear answer list, a follow-up question and a large enough sample. Read them as a trend, compare them over time and check them against other data.

Should I ask “How did you first hear about us?” or “What brought you here today?”

They answer different questions. “First hear” points to the channel that created demand. “Brought you here today” points to the channel that closed the sale. Most stores start with first touch, because that is the part their pixels miss.

What should I do with “Google” answers?

Ask a follow-up. Many buyers say Google when they searched for your brand after hearing about you elsewhere. Asking what they searched for separates real search demand from demand another channel created.

What is advanced attribution for post-purchase surveys?

It usually means going beyond the channel: following up on the exact creator, show or assistant, then storing that answer on the order for reporting. In Responsly this works from the first survey, and you can see it next to revenue, LTV and NPS.

Where can I start?

Install the Shopify app and create the ready-made survey in one click, or see post-purchase surveys for everything else you can ask after checkout.
