Make your questions required

Required questions block respondents from moving forward until they provide an answer. That validation keeps exports, quotas, and charts grounded in complete data instead of rows full of empty cells.

Turn on Required for a question

  1. Open your survey in the editor and select the question.
  2. In the right-hand panel, enable Required.
  3. Save or publish as usual; in the live form, people must answer before continuing past that step.

When to require answers—and when not to

Require questions that carry legal consent, routing, scoring, or core metrics you cannot analyze without a value.

Leave questions optional when they are nice-to-have context, long free text prompts, or sensitive topics where skipping is better than dropout. You can still collect partial journeys with skip logic and survey logic so only relevant items appear.

FAQ

How do I make a question required in Responsly?

Select the question in the editor and turn on the Required toggle in the right-hand settings panel. Respondents must answer before they can move on.

Why use required questions?

Required fields reduce missing answers that skew averages, NPS splits, and filters in Analysis. Use them when an answer is essential for your decision or segmentation.

Should every question be required?

No. Too many mandatory fields—especially long open-ended ones—can lower completion. Require only what you truly need, and consider optional follow-ups or logic for the rest.
